This little beauty of Lead Belly, captures the sole of an amazing musician and a fascinating man. I find him fascinating because he lived at a time before the civil rights movement. He lived in a very unfriendly world for African Americans. And in my opinion, he was a maverick and found his passion and lived it. He was in and out of jail, probably because he knew the laws were not for him. He was so talented that even in jail he was able to find his bliss.
I tweaked the image I found online, by making his hands and head bigger then his body. I tried to capture him capturing his zone, even though he was in jail. The stripped jail pants clinched it. I painted it around the same time I painted Cobain. I always think they go together. As I was introduced to Lead Belly through Cobain. I think of Lead Belly as a Zen Master and I hope I captured some of it.
