Angela: A beautiful Portrait of Bravery

$7,867.00

This vibrant, stunning oil painting on wood, titled Angela, captures my interpretation of her life, struggles, and remarkable bravery. Angela Davis is one of the most extraordinary individuals to ever live, and I’m eagerly awaiting the movie about her life.

Angela is now on view at The Academy,  she looks fabulous in this beautiful space.

This painting was such a joyous and beautiful experience, much like Angela herself. I might have crossed a line by including the Black Panther fist in her hair, formed from African symbols representing words like hope, strength, justice, equality, and more. I realize that as a white woman, I may have overstepped, but it felt so right. Additionally, I drew from her FBI most-wanted poster as reference. It’s taken me a long time to realize that I have my own unique artistic style—a way of seeing the world that is distinctly mine. My painting, Angela, captures that and is now on view at The Academy.

I admit I romanticize her life. It was an incredibly dangerous time for anyone fighting for equality, especially Black women. I admire everyone who stands up for equality for all people. Our society of scarcity breeds division, poverty, war, and all the other “isms.” While Angela may have a more grounded understanding of her own life, I find my version of her story intriguing, and I apologize for any naivety in that portrayal.

I was fortunate to take a class with Angela Davis called “Women and Prison” at S.F.S.U. The material was both fascinating and deeply relevant, but her delivery as a speaker was equally mesmerizing. She spoke with a melodic voice, and her cadence was so compelling that I was almost hypnotized, not just by what she said, but by how she said it. Her words resonated with me on multiple levels. It was an honor to be taught by someone I consider my hero.

This painting encapsulates my interpretation of her life, her struggles, and her incredible bravery. Angela Davis is one of the most remarkable human beings to ever walk the earth. I’m eagerly awaiting the movie about her life.
