“Seven Year Bitch” – Original Acrylic Painting on Wood Panel
This striking acrylic painting of Seven Year Bitch, inspired by the band’s iconic 1990s punk anthem “24,900 Miles Per Hour”, is painted on a 48″ x 36″ wood panel with wrapped edges, creating a seamless, modern look. The piece is one inch thick and signed with the title and date on the back, making it both a personal and powerful statement in any space.
The Inspiration:
The artwork is based on the music video for “24,900 Miles Per Hour”, capturing the raw energy and defiance of the underground feminist punk movement that emerged during the early ’90s in the Pacific Northwest. As I began creating this painting, I initially made the character of the “gross guy” more prominent, reflecting the anger and frustration I felt. But as I worked, I realized that the message needed to evolve—just as our world is evolving. I decided to tone down the depiction of the “gross guy,” shifting the focus to highlight how society, particularly women, are rising above these outdated, oppressive figures.
The Riot Grrrl Movement:
The Riot Grrrl movement—founded by punk bands like Seven Year Bitch—was a revolutionary force in the 1990s. It brought to light issues such as sexual assault, domestic violence, racism, patriarchy, and female empowerment. With their bold and fearless voice, the Riot Grrrls reshaped cultural conversations around gender, power, and equality. I wanted to honor that legacy in this painting, capturing not just the anger but also the growing sense of strength, unity, and change.
This piece celebrates the resilience and rebellion of the Riot Grrrls and the ongoing fight for women’s voices to be heard, amplified, and respected.
Perfect for: Fans of punk rock, Riot Grrrl history, and those who appreciate the power of art in shaping social change.
